Using this text as the foundational text for classes in my Master's program. If you are already an instructional designer like myself, you'll feel you could have written much of it yourself. But it is great to have it all documented and there is also much to learn that we just take for granted. It is a classic book referenced by the industry and something good to just have on your bookshelf even after the course is completed. For beginners, it is a must have. This book tells it all from the beginning through the traditional ID processes and gives you so much background, rich depth, and examples that is a fantastic preparation for anyone seeking to enter the field of Learning & Development. The only thing missing is the more contemporary agile methodologies, like SAM. But that can be a secondary reading after you learn the foundations. ;)
I bought this book for a class, yet love how it helps anyone attempting to design learning of anything. It is unfortunate that more plain educational courses don't use texts such as this to help professors learn about design where instruction is concerned. Heck, the IT departments at any software developer for education should also read this, as should IT departments at colleges. The book will help you present any information to anyone in a concise, motivating, interesting, engaging manner. I got a lot from this book, and this was just for an introductory course.
I am actually still in the process of using this text, but so far it has been very helpful. This was required text for a graduate course in Instructional Design and even if I had not been taking this course, I would still recommend this text simply because of the detail it provides and step-by-step method it uses to teach Instructional Design. If you are a new instructor looking for a text to help guide you through the design of a course, or already a designer looking for a desk reference to help with keeping everything in perspective or making explaining what you mean to others simpler, this text is definitely worth the purchase.
Textbook. It is picking up where my Cornell education left off. I am now in grad school at Purdue in Human Resources Development. Good book. It is only printed and punched. So be sure to have a one to one and a half inch ring notebook to snap it into.
Publisher should be ashamed of their work. The book is printed on the thinnest of papers. Be aware that the publisher doesn’t have a well staffed support desk since I called to figure out why the app is not allowing me to use voice over options on my iPhone. They are incompetent at their help desk. The review does not reflect the seller.
While this isn't the book my husband uses every day, he does use it quite often after finishing his instructional design degree. It contains information that makes your life so much easier in the field and honestly gives you a lot of different information that is crucial to your success in the field.
I used this book throughout my graduate coursework and definitely recommend it as a foundational text for beginning instructional designers and educators. The book does a great job of explaining ID theory in a systematic and easy-to-follow manner. I decided to keep this book even after I completed my degree and I still refer to it frequently when working on projects.
A little thick in some places, but otherwise straightforward. Walks you through the process very clearly.
